As each of us try to live our lives in what hopefully is seen as peace and equality, usually by a flick of a channel, or a tap of a button, can our day become possibly burned to flames in an instant when coming across a hegemonic ad incorporating young children as targets to promote sex, male viciousness towards women promoting feminism once more, or sly racist remarks towards different races, etc. The typical domination and poor belief systems still in use gives such an impression on the negative path still being taken to enslave society with the cultural hegemony of needing to look a certain way, act a certain way, smell, eat, laugh, drink, etc. the list goes on and on. Never can one go on without the problematic equation of “If I eat as less as possible like the ad I saw today, than I’m sure I’ll fit in those hot pair of jeans I splurged on, which will definitely make me popular” etc. By this hegemonic ideology, younger generations are usually those at high risk of rendering into a plastic “Barbie” – perfect in all aspects, which in fact, is obviously one of the main displays of cultural hegemony that drives people insane with the lust for the “finer things in life” no matter the consequences. Slowly but surely, this domination grows deeper from the media into our very own eyes to bring us closer to walking talking zombies of the 21st century.

A perfect example to further allocate this worldwide hegemonic ideology is the all to well-known Russian pop duo, t.A.T.u. Hit teenagers of 17 and 18 not only became famous for their addicting techno/electronic tunes on talent alone, but more so for their leading roles as lesbian sex symbols. MTV News: You Hear It First mentions, “For T.A.T.U., talk is cheap. The visuals — suggestive photos, performances in panties and tiny tank tops — are what has helped the group sell over a million copies of their 2001 Russian album, 200 Po Vstrechnoy” or 200 Kilometers an Hour in the Wrong Lane. Ivan Shapalov, a former psychologist and advertising executive played as producer and manager to these girls by creating the “racy image” of the hegemonic innocent school girl look as well as throwing in scandalous lesbianism between two young foreigners – a usual male directed fantasy. By this we are dumb founded by the fact that young females participated in what might as well have been called child pornography. It is the connotation that when you put schoolgirl outfits on females and have them in intimate situations it is seen as “sexy.” The sad part about it is how both females became brainwashed through cultural hegemony from the moment they were promised fortune and fame as long as they kiss in public. So if this is how society is willing to display their children, and the public is so easy to buy in and give the consent to let this dominance overrule, then we are as naïve as these two females who are as mentioned earlier, captivated by the lust for “the finer things in life” no matter the consequences, which is in fact a senseless ideology in itself. Therefore, each and every one of us shall live in a world where status “quo” will forevermore control our very minds unless we look to partake in INDIVIDUALITY. If we fail, walking talking zombies will walk the streets of our very earth and the negative side to hegemony will have won. With this, we must steer away from taking in every hegemonic demand that comes our way and live to see the next day with our own point of view and ours alone. Can you dare to imagine how bright our future looks at the rate we’re going?
